Eyes of Destiny is another rather inconspicuous video game in the long line of bare-boned, misleading, “monster chase you around while you collect items” type, “Indie” horror games. Fans of this genre looking for a short but thrilling experience will do themselves a favor and SKIP this poorly-made game. For more details, let us take a look into an in-depth review of Eyes of Destiny.
Eyes of Destiny gameplay overview
Eyes of Destiny is made by Large Lake Team and is available on Steam from June 22nd. The game is a standard affair of spawning on a map looking dark and scary where you need to go around and carry out mundane tasks while looking out for the monster chasing you.
- Collect the bags: The objective of the game is to gather X amount of bags in order to “clear” the map. Although, at no time did the game even provide a description to even why it wants us to collect these bags, this should speak to how mundane this horror subgenre has become when the developers even forgot to make it “makes sense”.
- Avoid monster: When collecting the bags, the monster will proceed to move around and chase you when in close contact. The monster, as per usual, can be avoided by turning your flashlight off and hiding behind big objects such as a pile of rubbles. You can also just run away from the monster by sprinting, although sprint is limited.
- Eyes mechanic: Throughout the map, there will be these red eyes on the wall that once taken can be used to see from the monster’s POV. Hence the name of the game “Eyes of Destiny”. However, time which you can see from the monster’s perspective is only around 3 seconds which makes it very difficult to make out where they are.
Eyes of Destiny critiques
For a case like Eyes of Destiny, there are really no positive things to be mentioned. The game is practically a sandbox mode where you spawn on a map and run around collecting bags with no other engaging game mechanic.
- Misleading presentation: The game trailer leads you to believe there is some sort of storyline with scenarios and audio that is not in the game. There is indeed no story mode in the game as of version 1.0.
- Absolutely bare-boned: The game has no story mode, only a tutorial and a sandbox mode. The tutorial will only teach you to move, interact with objects, crouch and the game’s Eyes mechanic. The sandbox mode is literally a choice between 3 maps and 3 monsters whereupon you spawn in and proceed to run from the monster and start collecting bags.
- Ridden with technical issues: Many of the basic menu settings options do not work. Such as the graphical settings and resolution. More importantly, the game constantly lets you lick out of bounds like it was in windowed mode despite being in Full Screen.
Eyes of Destiny – Is It Good?
In essence, Eyes of Destiny – made by Large Lake Team – looks like a small, bad horror Steam game that was created as an attempt to capitalize on the Twitch Indie sensations, horror games such as Devour or Phasmophobia.
The only surprising thing about Eyes of Destiny is how brazen it is as an effort to release a game that disregards any minimum standards of what it takes to be a functional, playable video game for the sake of lazily capitalizing on a genre with already a poor reputation.
Case in point, if a half-baked title like Devour can be considered successful then no wonder even worse copy-cats like this one are being produced every day. The bad news is, such a trend will continue in the near future and with the help of Steam’s non-existent quality control over their listed games. We hope that this review has helped inform you to look out and pick better games to spend your money and time.
Final review verdict: 1/10 – Do not purchase
