Gameplay overview
I Am Part-time Worker!! is another game in the long line of parodical simulators that are listed on Steam almost every day. Unserious, half-baked simulator game like this one are nothing new as some of them do strike out and become relatively successful such as Internet Cafe Simulator. If you think Internet Cafe Simulator is not a very serious game then buckle in, because this game takes you to new and depressing lows.
In I Am Part-time Worker!! you are put in into the shoes of a part-time worker for a convenience store and your duty is to make sure the customers can buy their products and take care of an assortment of “troublemakers” that inconvenience the establishment. Essentially, the gameplay can be summarized with its three mechanics. If that sounds too basic that’s because it is and we will analyze further on this below. The game mechanics are:
- Product Scan: With a scanner (or a scan gun), you will scan the products to charge the products that customers wish to buy. After completing each customer’s purchase, you will earn the store revenue.
- Store Scan: Essentially an X-ray vision that lets you see through walls and obstacles to help you locate the ones that might be causing issues for the convenience store. Each “troublemaker” will add an Inconvenience Point the the store that will subtract revenue from it in an interval.
- Crowbar Attack: Once you have located the cause of nuisance within the vicinity, a healthy smack from your crowbar should put a stop to that troublesome customer’s shenanigans.
I Am Part-time Worker!! Pros
I Am Part-time Worker!!’ sense of humor is at the center of the game and, truthfully, the only real thing worth mentioning about it. The game’s humor is expressed in your various interactions with the troublesome customers who visit the store. From the regular idling and stealing from the store to a full-on crashing a van into the store, and oh wait, The Hulk showed up!!
The game does surprise you with these unexpected interactions which are very parodical and absurd, almost hinges on derangement. Imagine Japanese’s gameshow level of absurdity if you are aware of that. It is this very over-the-top absurdity that feels comedic but quite strange at the same time. This list is a fraction of all the shenanigans that your customers can do:
- Eats your merchandise
- Smoke in your staff room/bathroom
- Sleep in the freezer
- Weightlift the trash can and the street cones
- Try to steal your vault
- Rob you with a knife
- Rob you with a cartoon bonk hammer
- Biceps pose in front of the glass panel
- Twerk on the counter (classic)
- Vomit in front of the store
- Vandalism: kicking the machinery, graffiti
- Running around like a maniac
- Try to steal a whole isle on their back
- Cosplay a ghost
- Being a cartoon robot
- Crash into the store with a mini truck
- Becomes the Hulk when you confront them
With that being said, Please don’t be tempted to try this game just to see these interactions. Because while having something of value and unique is good and all, the game falls short in many fundamental aspects.
I Am Part-time Worker!! Cons
Well, let’s not beat around the bush here, I Am Part-time Worker!! is a pretty “scuffed” and it was meant to be that way. It does not take an expert to recognize the mediocre graphics, the basic character models, and the animations.
Perhaps it is quite pointless to even judge these aspects as they are not the intended effects and values that the game aims for. Having said that, these complaints are simply minor in comparison with the major flaws regarding the core game design below.
No gameplay progression
As mentioned before, this game only has virtually 2 tasks for you: Scan the goods and beat up the troublesome customers. There is no progression, no unlocking of new skills, or products, no improvement, no new way to earn revenue, or any amount of customization to your gameplay.
It is a simple grind of constant scanning the products and beating the troublemakers non-stop. To top it all off, the objective of the game, which is to earn revenue through these tasks, is essentially pointless. Since you can’t buy or improve anything for your store, there is no point to the money earned. Hence the complete pointlessness and tedium of the gameplay. I Am Part-time Worker!! is truly a parody as it truly makes fun of the players who happen to play it.
Lengthy levels with no option to save your progress
What’s more that needs to be pointed out, to prove the silliness of this game, is the fact that each level of the game is more than one hour long. Yes, one hour of grinding is the only 2 tasks as we have mentioned. The icing on the cake is the fact that you can not even save the game in during that hourly long level. Only when you finish the level can you unlock the next one.
I Am Part-time Worker!! – Is It Good?
I Am Part-time Worker!! could be funny at times but otherwise not a good game. It is that type of parody simulation game that attempts to make up for being a bad video game by masking itself as a comedic experience.
Final Score: 4/10 – Silly but not good
Unfortunately for the players that look for a short and funny time, this is probably not it. The game possesses excessively absurd comedy but is otherwise nowhere near enough to be an actual video game that works.
