With the upcoming release of Path of Exile 2, much information surrounding the game has had fans thrilled at the game’s future prospects. Especially the new playable classes that will be introduced to the game that are guaranteed to double the number of starting characters from 7 to at least 12. let’s take a deep dive into the brand new, and returning Starting Classes that you can play with in Path of Exile 2.
Breaking down Path of Exile 2 Starting Classes
Path of Exile 2 will have a staggering 12 starting classes at the minimum, with even more classes to be potentially released in the future. In order to categorize and analyze each of these characters, the easiest and most intuitive method is to sort them by their inherent attributes. This is the most basic and unique characteristic of each class:
- Warrior – Strength
- Ranger – Dexterity
- Sorceress – Intelligence
- Witch – Intelligence
- Huntress – Strength, Dexterity
- Mercenary – Strength, Dexterity
- Monk – Dexterity, Intelligence
- Druid – Strength, Intelligence
That leaves 4 more classes to be revealed in the near future. However, thanks to the data from Path of Exile 2 website, we have obtained the leak for the remaining playable classes. Combing with the missing attribute combinations, we can predict the upcoming playable characters with these as below:
- Marauder – Strength
- Gladiator – Dexterity
- Assassin – Dexterity, Intelligence
- Templar – Strength, Intelligence
Another class that is highly expected to make a return to Path of Exile 2 is the Scion, with the only triple-attributes base as Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence.
The base attributes dictate many aspects of a class including its attributes progression, play style, skill progression, ascendancy, etc. We obviously would expect a spell-casting class such as the Sorceress to be stacking intelligence and ascend into an Elementalist rather than an axe-wielding strength-stacker such as the Warrior. With that being said, let’s take a closer look at each of the new classes and their ascendancies.
Path of Exile 2 All New Starting Classes with leaked Classes
The Huntress
The Huntress is a Strength+Dexterity class that specializes in the spear weapon base that excels at fast-paced melee hit-and-run play style.
The spear, an exciting new weapon base of Path of Exile 2, grants the Huntress many useful movement skills as well as powerful spells.
This allows the Huntress to quickly cover the distance to the enemies with an Engage skill and land an attack such as Swirling Storm which will explode once she uses Disengage to evade herself from oncoming danger
With the addition of the Huntress class, GGG has doubled down on its approach to take heavy inspiration from its famous predecessor Diablo 2. Even at a glance, we can surmise that the Huntress class is closely modeled after the Amazon class in Diablo 2. This is a good thing, of course. Now fans of POE and D2 alike can finally look forward to the comeback of such an iconic video game character archetype.
The Monk
The Monk is a Dexterity+Intelligence class with a combo-stacking, fast-paced unarmed melee playstyle.
The introduction of the Monk class in Path of Exile 2 will also bring about an enhanced melee combat experience. Namely the movement skills and the new dodge roll mechanic making melee combat more agile and fluid than before.
The Sorceress
The Sorceress class is an Intelligence class that centers around heavy elemental damage spell casting.
With offensive spells such as Spark or Arc that release AOE lightning damage and defensive spells such as Ice Nova that explodes and freezes enemies once they have hit you enough time, or Arctic Armour which increases your defenses while standing still and chills enemies.
Path of Exile 2 Sorceress class weapon base like the staff will also be revamped and no longer has a melee default attack anymore but instead grants useful skill such as Unleash which allow your next skill to be trigger three times.
The Druid
Druid is a Strength+Intelligence class that casts spells in human form and dishes out massive melee attacks in combos when in its beast form.
In general, the design of the Druid class centers around casting utility and support spells (e.g. Volcano, Lightning Storm) in human form and then swiftly transforming into its beast form (bear form in this case) and destroying the enemies with thunderous Claw and Slam attacks.
On top of this, Druid’s beast form is also considered a secondary weapon class which will allow you to invest in both melee and spell damage at the same time. You can check out the walkthrough video by GGG for the Druid here.
The Mercenary
The Mercenary is a Strength+Dexterity class and a new addition to Path of Exile 2 playable characters roster. This class heavily utilizes the signature crossbow with an A-W-S-D movement system independent from a mouse aiming system that facilitates a third-person-shooter-like playstyle.
Another distinct characteristic of the mercenary class is its sheer variety of combat specializations, which include weapon base, bolt types, weapon skills, and attachments.
- Weapon bases: There are 3 crossbow bases: Sniper base, Shotgun base, and Assault rifle base
- Bolt: Armor piercing bolts erode armor, Incendiary bolts for fire damage that can also charge up and permafrost bolts chill/freeze enemies and create ice crystals.
- Weapon skills: such as Power shot which fires a powerful shot that guarantees a critical hit. Weapon skill in combination with Bolt types will create various interactions (Power shot with Armor pierce bolts results in high damage; with Incendiary bolts, big explosive blast; with Permafrost, creates a frost wall)
- Attachments: Essentially a skill gem in the off-hand gem slot. These include Grenade launcher for AOE damage, Flash grenade for stun, and Oil grenade for slow. Attachments also interact with the weapon base, for example, the crossbow heats up and adds extra damage to Grenade launcher.
The Ranger
The Ranger is a pure Dexterity class that will make its return to Path of Exile playable characters line-up. This agile and ranged class is specialized with the Bow weapon base which, similar to the crossbow, allows you to shoot while moving, with a slight movement speed penalty, of course.
Also similarly to the crossbow, the bow weapon class also gets weapon-granted skills such as Power shot which guarantees a critical hit and small AOE damage.
This gameplay trailer showcases a number of ranger skills and their interaction with one another as well as support skills. Bow skill gems can be divided into 3 sub-categories: Lightning base, Ice base, and Poison/plant base damage:
- Lightning base: Lightning Arrow, Lightning Rod, Storm Caller, Electrocuting Rod, etc.
- Ice base: Frost Escape
- Poison/plant base: Vine Arrow, Poison Bloom Arrow, Gas Cloud Arrow, Plague Bearer, etc.
The Witch
The new Witch class is an Intelligence class which has the Necromancer ascendancy in particular, shows many promising quality-of-life improvements for minion builds.
Most minions skills in Path of Exile 2 no longer require re-summoning. The minions that die will also automatically revive themselves as long as there are no minions that died recently. Thus, you can happily set and forget the minions like never before.
That said, not all minions can revive themselves. For example, the Zombie minions will not self-revive. However, they make up by being tanky.
Furthermore, you can now manually order minions to move to a location or attack a certain target. As mentioned before, the new resource Spirit that is used for reserving your auras will also reserve your minion skills.
